“Our main goal is to bring metal to the masses and for it to go mainstream again”

Hawxx are part of the essential line up of tipped bands appearing at Volume 1 of The Deptford Mix Up (Saturday 27th July Rock and Indie all dayer from 3pm in London. Tickets – £8 (total – click here) in advance or only £10 on the door – for a mini festival of top tips.

I’d caught them at the end of last year playing with Bugeye at a Camden Rocks night and been impressed with their authentically analogue sound. The seeds of something. It’s going to be great to see them on local turf.

Anna Papadimitriou– vocals, guitar, Hannah Staphnill– guitar, backing vocals, Iman Ahmed – bass, backing vocals and Jessica Dann– drums – collectively known as Hawxx – are back in South East London!

Anna gave us the lowdown : “We have played the New Cross Inn a couple of times which is always fun. Our live shows are INTENSE. We’re all giving it everything on stage. It’s the 30-45 minutess where we can release the kraken and make people hear what we have to sing about. There’s a whole lot of head banging, sweat and ugly guitar faces.

The band have really come on since the above mentioned Camden Rocks show…

Anna : “2019 has been great for us so far. It’s hard to believe we’ve only been going a year.  We’ve played loads of shows, gone on our first tour, we’ve released two singles which we recorded with producer Larry Hibbitt (Hundred Reasons, Marmozets, Nothing But Thieves).

Our latest track, ‘The Lie’, was played on BBC Introducing. Our main goal is to bring metal to the masses and for it to go mainstream again – so that was pretty sweet. We also played our first festivals including Bearded Theory, Hanwell Hootie and Camden Rocks.”

With so much going on in their first year, looks like quite a few people find Hawxx impressive, too!

TheZineUK : “It feels like there’s a rock buzz swelling under the radar, right?”

Anna : “I sure do hope so! I love that there is such a strong underground rock n roll scene in London. We feel it’s only a matter of time before it becomes mainstream again. These things go in circles. I have read so many articles lately about metal in particular being one of the most popular genres at the moment. Works for us 🙂 Were definitely feeling the buzz!

Camden Rocks was a really good example of this. We were on at 1pm and were expecting to play to no one, but we packed the room out. For the rest of the festival we got stopped by quite a few people who said how much they loved our band. It was so lovely.

See you next week!”

Hailing from Greece, Wales, England and Bahrain, Hawxx are yer typical London rockers and they’re bringing an untypically expansive rock sound to Amersham Arms! “Will blow the cobwebs away” (BBC Introducing) https://facebook.com/hawxxmusic/
