BLAB: ‘R.I.P.’

BLAB: ‘R.I.P.’

Heeoojazfuq single! Released on the Essexual Cool Thing Records, 'R.I.P.', the debut single from Blab, has got the ROCK swagger of myriad main stage strutters with youth's literate suss rapping over with bite. Ice-cool as Johnny Marr guitar. BOLD never gets old. This rock is boulder. Kinda liked it from first listen. Kinda freaking LOVE it, 'cos I went back, and again. Ha ha. That first listen evoked a memory of Polly Harvey (from Yeovil in the black leather jacket and docs) when she debuted on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury and a hundred thousand jaws dropped at P.J.Harvey's bright pink cat suit. I enjoy being vintage but am thrilled that new heritage is being made. Blab is definitely a 50ft Queenie. The musicians who are a product of two…

Thomas Bartlett; ‘Shelter’

Thomas Bartlett; ‘Shelter’

Available 24th July 2020 (on Modern Records/BMG), Thomas Bartlett’s debut solo album 'Shelter' contains eight piano nocturnes, inspired, he says, by the work of Chopin, Satie, Ravel, Talk Talk and Keith Jarrett.  He recorded it in his home studio in New York over two days at the beginning of lockdown as a way of creating something calming.  Thomas explains:  “There’s a space that I really love to be in, as a listener, and as a player.  It’s a feeling of arrival, and comfort, and peace.  It’s an easy place for me to get to, but one that I’m suspicious of because of that.”  He was initially unsure whether the songs were good enough to share, but was quickly convinced by friends. For those who do not know the name, Thomas…

‘Genetic Cabaret’ by Asylums

Asylums release their third album on Cool Thing Records, 17th July 2020 http://www.asylumsband.com/ Physical; https://asylums.tmstor.es/ Digital: https://asylums.tmstor.es/ 'Genetic Cabaret', the coming of rage lucky-number album release from Asylums, swaggers open with intent. 'Catalogue Kids' is the sound of a blockbuster movie's rock'n'roll band arriving on a stage - with pyrotechnics. As a body of (smart and hard) work, it jump starts an adventure that doesn't run out of sparks. Asylums display the confidence to tug heart strings with the striking melodies and harmonised licks of 'Platitudes' weaving like bumblebee flight in and out of car-chase rhythmic bang bang bursts. While noting, relevantly; "Is this the loneliest place in the world? / There’s a plague going around." Get ready for these songs to live in both your head and in your…

‘Fantasies of a Stay At Home Psychopath’

‘Fantasies of a Stay At Home Psychopath’

The Blinders release their second album. Review by Alan Neilson. What are the chances of releasing an album called ‘Fantasies of a Stay At Home Psychopath’ at the exact moment in time when the world is forced to stay at home? The Blinders’ second album was due to be released in May, right at the height of lockdown in the UK, but was delayed due to difficulties in guaranteeing pressing and shipping in time for the original release date, as well as not being able to play live and promote the album with live shows. All of the tour supporting the album was cancelled and rescheduled for September**, which even now seems a little optimistic at best, and unlikely at worst, when pockets of the country enter further localised lockdowns.…

Conor Molloy – Hiding A Storm

Conor Molloy is a composer and performer of smart, chirpy tunes with dark lyrics. His influences include Bob Dylan, The Arctic Monkeys and The Libertines. Conor's already played some impressive gigs and has just released his new single, 'Hiding A Storm'. Kelly Munro grabbed an interview. How long have you been making music? "I've been writing songs since the age of nine (so my mother tells me). I've been singing them with my guitar since about age twelve (sometimes raucously!). I've been performing in front of whomever will listen since about the age of eighteen and pursuing music in a more professional capacity since late 2016." What’s been some of your highlights so far on your musical journey? "Supporting Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott on tour around the UK in…

When This Is Over

"HOPE IS BUT TWO METERS AWAY, ONE DAY SOON THE BANDS WILL PLAY" A spartacus tinted summery anthem from The Velvet Hands for Music Venue Trust dan, sam, louis, toby by harvey williams fairly Fact. This is gonna be so many of us after lockdown: "Walk down the street with a big fat grin, new shoes on my feet and I've had a trim..." Fuct. We've a long way to go to grinning. We'll get there. Britain is a nation with community boozing at heart (see TV). Although we've been divided then locked down. One day again, we will be reunited and rocked out. Until then, stay safe because we are not being looked after by those in charge of the nation, any more than the positive, socially inclusive gig…

The Novus

‘Man On The Bridge’. Band On The Cusp. Image by Auberonfilm for ASBO Magazine Midlands musical ringleaders, The Novus, not only shoot from the hip but were shooting a video for their latest single, when they were interrupted by gun shots! Probably not even the most surreal day in their story so far, to be fair. More on that, to follow, but if you're not on board with The Novus already, get involved. A star shaped ride that starts with ambitiously rhythm, riff and tune sparked rock songs and wow-the-crowd live performances - they have the "IT" factor. Summer 2020 single, 'Man On The Bridge' is out now to flail about to and roar along with. It continues their all-thriller-no-filler release CV. It was produced and mixed by this documentary's ominpresent Wizard…
